How amounts work when you sell in other currencies

Condition amounts and fixed discounts are converted to the customer's currency at the exchange rate. Setup notes for stores that sell in other currencies.

Every amount you set in this app is in the store currency. When customers purchase in a currency other than the store currency (such as US dollars), the amount is converted to the customer's currency before it is used to evaluate conditions and calculate discounts.

Conversion uses Shopify's exchange rate for the currency the customer is viewing. You cannot set a different amount for each currency.

The following amounts are converted to the customer's currency before they are used. This applies to both discount campaigns and gift campaigns.

  • Eligibility condition “Cart subtotal price”: The converted amount is compared with the cart subtotal. The same applies to a condition on a shipping discount

  • Eligibility condition “Customer total spent”: At checkout, the converted amount is compared with total spent. Also see “Customer total spent condition” below

  • Discount value “Fixed amount” and “Maximum discount amount”: For order, product, and shipping discounts, the discount uses the converted amount

  • Repeatable gift “Subtotal price”: The base amount, such as “1 per ¥5,000”, is converted and used to calculate the gift quantity

Example: A condition of “¥5,000 or more” is evaluated as about $32 or more when ¥1 = $0.0064. The rate is an example. The actual amount depends on the exchange rate at that time.

The discount amount in the storefront product message and the quantity of gifts added automatically are calculated with the same conversion.

The following settings are not amounts, so they do not change by currency.

  • The discount rate of a percentage (%) discount

  • The “Cart item quantity” condition and the “Item quantity” basis of a repeatable gift

Rounding adjustment applies only to carts in the store currency. In a cart in a currency other than the store currency, settings such as “To nearest 100” are not used, and the converted discount amount is applied as is.

Caution: For a currency whose exchange rate is manually set to 1.0 in Shopify Markets, the cart cannot be distinguished from a cart in the store currency, so rounding adjustment is applied.

In a cart in a currency other than the store currency, Shopify may convert the total spent used at checkout at a rate about 2% lower than the cart's exchange rate. The difference varies by currency.

Because of this, customers whose total spent exceeds the condition amount by only about 2% or less may not meet the condition at checkout. Customers whose total spent is well above the condition amount are not affected.

  • Discount campaign: The discount is not applied

  • Gift campaign: Even if a gift is added automatically on the storefront, an error appears at checkout when “Limit distribution of gifts that do not meet conditions” is enabled in the Restrictions settings

If you sell in other currencies and want customers to receive the benefit under this condition, set the condition amount about 2% lower. For example, to use “¥10,000 or more”, set “¥9,800 or more”.

If you sell in other currencies, switch the currency with the storefront country/region selector and check the following in a test cart.

  • The discount or gift switches on and off around the condition amount

  • The “Fixed amount” discount and the “Maximum discount amount” appear in the customer's currency

  • The repeatable gift quantity matches the subtotal
